What to sell

How to sell ebooks online and deliver PDFs the moment buyers pay

To sell ebooks online, upload your PDF (and an EPUB if you have one) as a file product, set a price and connect a way to get paid. Each reader gets a private download link the moment the payment confirms, on the order page and in the receipt email. ShopFast does this on every plan, the free one included.

An ebook is a file, so selling one sounds simple. If you want to sell ebooks online without a stream of “where’s my download?” emails, the detail matters: formats that open on the reader’s device, a link that reaches them the second they pay, a product page that shows what’s inside, and a way to send the corrected edition to everyone who already bought. This guide covers each of those, for novels, guides, workbooks and any PDF you’d sell.

Which formats should you sell an ebook in?

Pick formats by how the book will be read, not by habit.

Format Best for Keep in mind
PDF Guides, workbooks, cookbooks, designed books, anything printable Looks the same everywhere, but small text is hard to read on a phone
EPUB Novels and long, text-led books read on phones and ereaders Text reflows to fit the screen, so fixed layouts and wide tables suffer
ZIP A book plus extras: worksheets, templates, audio, both formats One download; name the files so the reader knows where to start

If you can, include both PDF and EPUB. It costs you one more export and removes the most common question before a sale. Workbooks are the exception: they’re usually PDF only, often with fillable form fields so buyers can type straight into them.

Prepare the file before you upload

A few minutes of preparation saves a lot of support:

  • Name the file after the book and edition, like freelance-pricing-guide-v2.pdf, not final-FINAL.pdf. Buyers keep it for years.
  • Compress the images. A huge PDF is slow to download on a phone and slow to open.
  • Add a copyright page with your name, the edition, the year and what the buyer may do with the file (personal use, no reselling or sharing).
  • Make the table of contents clickable and test the links on a phone and a laptop.
  • Sell only what you have the rights to. Your own writing is simple. If you bought resale or private label rights to someone else’s ebook, read exactly what that license allows before you list it.

Sell ebooks online on your own website

You don’t need to build a site to have one. Every ShopFast store gets its own address on shopfa.st with a ready-made template, a checkout and delivery, and you can change it section by section in the visual editor. Connect your own domain on a paid plan when you want one (see current plans). That store is your ebook store, whether it holds one book or fifty, grouped into categories and collections.

Already have a blog or a newsletter site? Add a buy button, a product card or the whole checkout to the pages you already have with embeds, so readers can buy from the article itself. More on that in selling without a website, and on building the store itself in digital storefront.

What happens after a reader pays

Delivery is automatic. The moment the payment confirms, the order page shows a private, signed download link made for that order. The same link is in the receipt email, and the order stays in the buyer’s library, so a lost email isn’t a lost book. You set how long links work and how many downloads each order gets, and a full refund stops the links working. See automatic delivery for digital products for how payment confirmation and delivery fit together.

A product can also send a short message to every buyer. Use it for what a PDF can’t do on its own: a link to a readers’ group, a note on which file to open first, or how to reach you with questions.

Write a product page that sells the book

Buyers can’t flip through your ebook, so show them:

  • The table of contents, word for word. It’s the best summary you have.
  • Sample pages as images, including one from the middle, not just the cover.
  • Who it’s for and who it isn’t for. Honest fit prevents more refunds than any policy.
  • The facts: page count, formats, edition date, and whether the workbook pages are fillable.

Collect reviews from verified purchases as sales come in. Your store also writes titles, descriptions and product structured data for search engines (store SEO), and SEO for digital product stores covers the rest.

Price guides, workbooks and series

A short guide and a three-hundred-page manual shouldn’t be priced the same way. Patterns that suit books:

  • Bundles for series. Sell each book on its own and a bundle of the whole series. A bundle is delivered as its parts, so the buyer gets every file.
  • Pay what you want for a first book or a short guide, so readers who love it can pay more. Tips at checkout do the same for fixed-price books.
  • A launch discount code for your mailing list in release week, instead of a permanently low price.

The full playbook is in how to price digital products.

Send the corrected edition to everyone who bought

Typos get found, rules change, new chapters get written. In Catalog → Updates, post a short changelog with the new file, and everyone who owns the ebook gets it by email, plus by Discord or Telegram message where you use them. It also shows under What’s new in each buyer’s library. You can limit an update to buyers from certain dates, which helps when only an early edition had the error (updates to owners).

Refunds, sharing and tax

Be realistic about sharing: any file can be copied once it’s downloaded. Expiring links and download limits stop the link from being passed around, and a clear copyright page keeps honest readers honest. Beyond that, your time is better spent on your next book.

A downloaded ebook can’t be taken back, so decide your refund policy before launch and state it on the product page. Buyers in the EU, EEA and UK confirm at checkout that they want delivery right away, which waives their withdrawal right for digital content, and the receipt records it (buyer protection). For wording, see refund policy for digital products.

Ebooks can be taxed differently from one country to the next, and ShopFast lets you set a tax category per product (taxes). The basics are in VAT on digital products.

Step by step

  1. 1. Create a file product

In Products → Add product, choose a file (download) product. Give it the book's title, a description of who it's for, a cover image and a few sample pages.

  2. 2. Upload the book

Upload the PDF, the EPUB or one ZIP with both. Set how long each download link works and how many downloads each order gets.

  3. 3. Set the price

Set the price, and create a discount code for your mailing list if you're opening with a launch offer.

  4. 4. Connect how you get paid

In Money → Payments, connect your own gateway (Stripe, PayPal, crypto to your own wallet and others) or apply for ShopFast Pay.

  5. 5. Run a test sale

Press Simulate first sale on Get started to see the order and the download link exactly as a reader will.

Questions sellers ask

Can I sell a PDF without a website?

Yes. Every ShopFast store gets its own address on shopfa.st with a template and a checkout, so you can share a link to your ebook the day you sign up. If you already have a blog or portfolio, you can put a buy button on it instead.

How do buyers download the ebook after paying?

The order page shows a private download link the moment the payment confirms, and the same link is in the receipt email and the buyer's library. You choose how long the link works and how many times it can be used.

Should I sell my ebook as a PDF or an EPUB?

PDF if the layout matters: workbooks, designed guides, anything with tables or fillable pages. EPUB if it's mostly text read on phones and ereaders. Many authors include both so the reader can choose.

Can I stop people from sharing my ebook?

Not completely: once a file is downloaded, it can be copied. Expiring links and download limits stop the link itself from being passed around, and a clear copyright page tells honest readers what they may do.

Can I send a new edition to people who already bought?

Yes. Post an update with the new file from Catalog → Updates and everyone who owns the ebook gets it by email, plus Discord or Telegram message where you use them. It also shows under What's new in their library.

Do I need an ISBN to sell an ebook on my own site?

Generally no. An ISBN is an identifier that bookstores, distributors and libraries use to track editions; it isn't needed to sell a file from your own store. Check with your country's ISBN agency if you plan to sell through retailers later.
