PayPal is the button many buyers look for before they trust a store they’ve never bought from. For a digital product, PayPal checkout gives them that comfort, and gives you a payment that PayPal confirms and that fits PayPal’s terms. The other side is disputes: a buyer who says a download never arrived can open one. This page covers both ways to connect PayPal, the extra buttons it brings (Venmo, Pay Later, cards), and how to keep disputes winnable.
Two ways to sell digital products with PayPal
| PayPal Business app (API keys) | Just your PayPal email | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | PayPal Business | Any PayPal account |
| What you paste | Client ID and Secret of a Live app | Your PayPal email |
| Buyers can pay with | PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo, cards | PayPal checkout |
| Where buyers pay | In a window over your checkout, approving in PayPal’s popup | On PayPal’s page, then back to their order |
| Refunds | From ShopFast | In PayPal |
If you have a Business account, connect the app: buyers stay on your store, get more ways to pay, and you refund from one place. The email-only option suits personal accounts or a quick start. With it, payments PayPal holds as pending (an eCheck, or a currency your account doesn’t accept by itself) wait until PayPal completes them, and the order is delivered then.
Connect a PayPal Business app
- Log in to developer.paypal.com with your PayPal Business account.
- Create an app under Live (not Sandbox) and copy its Client ID and Secret.
- In ShopFast, open Money → Payments, pick PayPal and paste both. ShopFast checks them with PayPal before saving: keys PayPal refuses, or test keys while your checkout takes real payments, are turned down with a message under the field.
- Place a small order on your store and pay with PayPal. It’s marked paid, and delivered, as soon as PayPal confirms.
Saved credentials are encrypted and never shown again, not even to you; to change them, connect again. The panel in Money → Payments draws each PayPal screen you’ll see and the values to copy, and get paid: the complete guide has screenshots of every step.
Venmo checkout and PayPal Pay Later
With the Business app connected, your checkout lists PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo and cards as separate choices, each with its own mark. The buyer picks one and approves it in PayPal’s popup without leaving your store.
- Venmo is a US wallet. For buyers who already use it, paying takes a tap instead of a card number.
- Pay Later lets eligible buyers split the cost into payments PayPal sets. Read PayPal’s terms for how and when you are paid for those orders.
- Cards let buyers without a PayPal account pay through PayPal.
PayPal decides which buyers are eligible for Venmo and Pay Later, by country and account. You don’t set anything extra in your store for them.
Does PayPal allow digital goods?
PayPal takes payments for many kinds of digital goods, and it also keeps a list of things it won’t process. Read PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy for your product type before you connect, and ask PayPal if you’re unsure. ShopFast has its own rules on top: no stolen or leaked keys, no cracked software, no game cheats (what you can sell).
One point specific to products you can’t ship: PayPal’s Seller Protection has its own eligibility rules, and digital items often fall outside them. Check the current terms for your country, and plan to win disputes with your own evidence.
Win PayPal disputes on digital downloads
The usual PayPal dispute on a digital product says the item never arrived. Your answer is proof of delivery, and the more of it you keep, the better:
- Delivery records. The order page shows the keys, files and links the moment PayPal confirms. The receipt email carries them, and the buyer’s library keeps them.
- Keys sent and downloads. Which key went to which order, and when the files were downloaded.
- The buyer’s IP and country. Useful when the buyer claims they never made the purchase.
ShopFast imports PayPal chargebacks into Disputes & Claims with their evidence deadline, so you add all of this in one place (buyer protection).
Fewer disputes start when buyers have a faster route than PayPal. Report a problem on the order page opens a claim with you, with a three-day reply-by date. A refund there, full or partial, to PayPal or as store credit, costs you less than a lost dispute. Say how you handle this in your refund policy for digital products.
Keep risky orders away from PayPal
- Fraud Shield checks every checkout before payment and again after PayPal confirms it, and holds suspicious orders until you approve them.
- Order limits give PayPal its own smallest and largest order, separate from cards (order limits).
- Gateway failover offers one-tap buttons for your next ways to pay if a PayPal payment fails, details kept.
The full playbook is in how to prevent chargebacks on digital goods.
Why not ask for Friends and Family?
Some sellers ask buyers to pay with PayPal Friends and Family to avoid fees and disputes. PayPal’s terms don’t allow F&F for goods, and buyers who pay that way get no purchase protection. ShopFast can confirm F&F payments from PayPal’s emails, but PayPal checkout keeps you inside PayPal’s rules. PayPal Friends and Family for digital goods covers it in full.
PayPal works well next to other methods: pair it with Stripe for cards and wallets, and every PayPal order gets the same automatic delivery as the rest. Compare all of them in payment methods for digital products.
Step by step
1. Use a PayPal Business account
Log in to developer.paypal.com with your PayPal Business account. A personal account can use the email-only connection instead.
2. Create a Live app
Create an app under Live, not Sandbox, and copy its Client ID and Secret.
3. Paste the keys in ShopFast
In Money → Payments, pick PayPal and paste both. ShopFast checks them with PayPal before saving and explains any problem under the field.
4. Test with a small order
Place a small order on your store and pay with PayPal. It's marked paid and delivered as soon as PayPal confirms it.
Questions sellers ask
Can I sell digital products with a personal PayPal account?
Yes, with the email-only connection: buyers pay through PayPal checkout and come back to their order. Connecting with API keys, for Venmo, Pay Later and cards in a window over your store, needs a Business account.
Does ShopFast take a fee on PayPal payments?
No. PayPal is your own gateway, so ShopFast takes no fee on those orders. PayPal's own fees still apply.
Can buyers pay with Venmo on my store?
Yes, when you connect a PayPal Business app. Venmo then shows as its own choice at checkout for the buyers PayPal offers it to.
Do buyers leave my store to pay with PayPal?
Not with the Business app: they approve the payment in PayPal's popup over your checkout. With the email-only connection they pay on PayPal's page and come back to their order.
When is a PayPal order delivered?
The moment PayPal confirms a completed payment for the exact total. A payment PayPal holds as pending, such as an eCheck, is delivered once PayPal completes it.
What do I send PayPal when a buyer says a download never arrived?
Your delivery records: the order page and receipt that carried the files or keys, the download records, and the buyer's IP and country. ShopFast imports PayPal chargebacks with their deadline so you can add it all in one place.
