What to sell

How to sell Discord roles and run a paid Discord server

To sell Discord roles, put your paid channels behind a role, sell that role as a product (one-time or as a membership), and let a bot grant it when payment confirms and remove it when access ends. With ShopFast, buyers get the role the moment they pay and lose it on a refund or when their membership ends.

A Discord role is the simplest paywall there is. Discord already decides who sees which channels by role, so if a role can only be bought, the channels behind it become a paid product. What makes it work as a business is everything around the role: who grants it, who takes it away, and what members see before they pay. The focus here is roles and membership access; for selling keys, files and other products inside a server, see how to sell on Discord.

How do Discord role sales work?

Three pieces fit together:

  1. A role in your server, such as Member or VIP.
  2. Channel permissions that show your paid channels only to that role.
  3. A product in your store that grants the role when someone pays.

On ShopFast, a Discord role grant can be added to any product: a membership, a one-time purchase, a license key or a download. The role goes to the buyer’s Discord account: the one that started checkout with /buy in your server, or the one they connect with the Connect Discord button at checkout or on their order page. It’s granted the moment the payment confirms (or the moment they connect, if they pay first). If the order is fully refunded or the membership ends, the role is removed. Nobody on your team has to hand out roles or audit who stopped paying.

Set up the server before you sell

The way your server is laid out decides whether visitors convert into members. Before you open the store:

  • Lock the paid category. Deny the @everyone role the right to view your paid channels, then allow your paid role. Check it from a test account that has no roles.
  • Leave a free front door. A welcome channel, your rules and a preview channel that shows the kind of thing members get. People rarely pay for channels they can’t picture.
  • Mind the role order. Discord only lets a bot give roles that sit below its own highest role, so the bot’s role has to be above every role you sell.
  • Read Discord’s rules. Discord has its own terms and policies on monetizing a server and on what can be sold. Read the current versions before you charge.

Pick a model: one-time, monthly or tiered

Model How to set it up Fits
Lifetime access One product that grants the role, paid once Course alumni, tool owners, small communities
Monthly membership A membership with auto-renew that grants the role Communities that post new content every week
Tiers A role and a product per tier, each tier seeing its own channels Servers with a free, a paid and a premium layer
Role as a bonus A key or file product that also grants a role A private support or buyers-only channel

Lifetime sounds generous, but it commits you to serving that member for as long as the server exists. A monthly plan matches ongoing work to ongoing payment. If you offer both, set the lifetime price well above several months of the monthly one, so it stays a choice for committed members rather than the default.

The Discord subscription bot side of a membership

For recurring access, sell the role as part of a membership. Buyers can turn on auto-renew, which charges a saved card each period and retries when a card is declined (auto-renew). While the membership runs, the member keeps the role. When it ends, the role goes, and the member drops out of your paid channels without anyone on your team having to act.

Buyers who pay another way, such as crypto, renew by buying the next period when the current one runs out. More on recurring plans in how to sell subscriptions online.

Keep members informed without pinging everyone

  • A welcome message. Every product can send a message to its buyers. Use it for a short “start here”: which channel to read first and how to get help.
  • Updates by DM. Catalog → Updates reaches everyone who owns a product by email, Discord DM and Telegram, which is better for important news than an @everyone ping that many members have muted.
  • Staff lookups. When someone says they paid but can’t see the channels, your team can check their order from Discord with /lookup.

Refunds, chargebacks and paid access

Access that was granted can be taken away, which makes roles easier to refund fairly than keys. A full refund removes the role. Refunds can also be partial, and they can go back to the payment method or out as store credit (buyer protection).

Chargebacks from Stripe and PayPal arrive in your dashboard with their evidence deadline. Delivery records and the buyer’s IP and country help you answer them. Fraud Shield checks every checkout before any role is granted (Fraud Shield), and the wider steps are in preventing chargebacks on digital goods.

Price a Discord membership

Price the access by what members get, not by what other servers charge. A few patterns that hold up:

  • Keep tiers few. Two or three, each with a clear difference in channels or perks.
  • Offer a longer period. A quarterly or yearly option for members who know they’ll stay.
  • Let people try. A short, cheap period lowers the bar for someone on the fence.

How to price digital products goes deeper. If part of your audience prefers Telegram, Telegram access can be added to products the same way (selling Telegram access).

Questions sellers ask

Does the buyer get the Discord role automatically after purchase?

Yes. Once the buyer's Discord account is connected (at checkout, on the order page, or by buying with /buy in your server), the role is granted the moment the payment confirms, with no staff member involved.

What happens to the role when a membership ends or is refunded?

It's removed. A full refund removes the Discord role, and so does the end of a membership, so access always matches what the buyer is paying for.

Can I sell several tiers, like Member and VIP?

Yes. Create a role for each tier and sell each as its own product, with the channels for that tier visible to that role only.

Does Discord allow paid servers?

Discord has its own terms and policies for monetizing a server and for what can be sold there, and they can change. Read the current versions for your server, along with ShopFast's own rules on what you can sell.

Do I need a website to sell access to my Discord server?

No. Every store gets an address on shopfa.st that you can pin in your server, and members can also start a purchase with the /buy command.
