How to accept crypto payments for digital products

To accept crypto payments for digital products, connect a wallet or a crypto payment gateway to your checkout and deliver only once the payment arrives in full. On ShopFast you paste an xpub or address for BTC, LTC, ETH, USDC or USDT and buyers pay your own wallet with no processor fee and no ShopFast fee, or you connect NOWPayments, Cryptomus, Heleket or BTCPay Server.

Crypto is the one common way to pay that a buyer’s bank can’t reverse. For digital products, which arrive in seconds and can’t be sent back, that matters more than it does for a parcel. Crypto also reaches buyers whose cards get declined abroad and buyers who would rather not type card details into a store they just found. The trade-offs are real too: prices move, network fees rise and fall, and every refund is a transaction you send yourself. This page covers both sides and how to set up a crypto checkout that delivers on its own.

Why accept crypto payments for digital products

  • No chargebacks from a bank. A card payment can be disputed weeks later. A confirmed crypto payment stays where it landed. ShopFast can’t pull it back either: refunds go out from your wallet or your processor.
  • Buyers anywhere. A wallet works the same in every country, with no card network deciding whether a cross-border payment goes through.
  • Paid straight to you. With your own wallet, the money never sits with a processor waiting for a payout.

What it costs you: some buyers have never sent crypto, a coin’s price can move between checkout and the moment you sell it, and a wrong network or a mistyped amount turns into a support conversation. Unless your buyers already hold crypto, offer it next to a card or PayPal option rather than as the only way to pay. Payment methods for digital products compares every option.

Your own wallet or a crypto payment gateway?

There are two ways to take crypto: watch your own wallet for incoming payments, or let a processor run the payment page and report back.

Setup Custody What you connect Fees
Your own wallet Self-custody: coins land in your wallet Your wallet’s xpub or a receiving address No processor fee and no ShopFast fee
BTCPay Server Self-custody, on a server you run Your server’s address, store ID and API key Your own hosting
NOWPayments Set by the processor’s terms API key and IPN secret key The processor’s own fees
Cryptomus Set by the processor’s terms Merchant ID and Payment API key The processor’s own fees
Heleket Set by the processor’s terms Merchant ID and API key (Heleket approves you first) The processor’s own fees

A self-custody crypto checkout means nobody can freeze or hold your balance, and also nobody can recover it if you lose your keys. Processors can offer more coins and their own dashboards and payout options; read each one’s terms and fee page before you pick. With a processor, buyers pay on its page and come back to their order afterward.

Which coins to accept

Wallet-to-wallet payments on ShopFast take BTC, LTC, ETH, USDC and USDT. They behave differently:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) is the coin most buyers know. Confirmations take a while and network fees climb when the network is busy, which makes it a poor fit for very small orders.
  • Litecoin (LTC) is usually quicker and cheaper to send, which suits small purchases.
  • Ethereum (ETH) is widely held; its network fees move with demand.
  • USDC and USDT are stablecoins meant to track the US dollar, so what you receive keeps its value while you hold it. For a store that prices in dollars, they remove most of the price risk.

Stablecoins exist on more than one blockchain, and coins sent on the wrong network are hard or impossible to recover. Tell buyers to send on exactly the network the payment page asks for.

What an xpub is, and how to share it safely

An xpub (extended public key) is a read-only key for one account in your wallet. Software that has it can work out that account’s receiving addresses and see payments arrive, but it can’t spend anything. That is why a checkout asks for an xpub and never for anything secret.

  1. Never paste a seed phrase or private key into any website, ShopFast included. A checkout never needs them.
  2. Use a separate wallet account for the store. An xpub reveals every address and balance of its account, so keep personal funds somewhere else.
  3. Keep your backup safe. With self-custody, your recovery phrase is the only way back into the wallet.

If your wallet can’t export an xpub, a single receiving address works too.

Network fees, underpayments and late payments

Some wallets take the network fee out of the amount sent, so a payment can arrive slightly short. In Money → Payments → Crypto, under Price lock and edge cases, you choose how short a payment may be and still count: a share of the order, or a fixed amount for small orders where a share is only cents. A payment short by more than that waits: the buyer sees what arrived, what is still due and a countdown to send the rest. If the rest never comes, the payment is marked partly paid and waits for you to accept it or send the coins back.

Slow confirmations don’t cost you the sale either: a checkout that only ran out of time still delivers when its exact total arrives late. ShopFast watches the chain and hands over the key, file or access as soon as the payment counts, the same automatic delivery every other method gets.

Tiny crypto orders can cost the buyer more in network fees than the product is worth. Order limits let you offer crypto only from an amount, and cards only up to one (order limits).

Refunds and disputes when buyers pay in crypto

A crypto payment can’t be reversed by the buyer, their bank or ShopFast. A refund is a new transaction from your wallet or processor, so get the buyer’s refund address in writing and check it before you send anything.

Decide ahead of time whether you refund the coin amount or the price in your store’s currency, since the two drift apart when the price moves, and write that into your refund policy.

That same finality makes crypto a fraud tool for you. Fraud Shield’s chargeback shield can steer a risky checkout away from cards and toward crypto or store credit, and you can price crypto lower so buyers take the switch (Fraud Shield). The full playbook is in how to prevent chargebacks on digital goods.

Set up crypto checkout on ShopFast

  1. Create a separate account in your wallet for store payments.
  2. Open Money → Payments → Crypto and paste the xpub or a receiving address for each coin you take.
  3. Set how short a payment may be, and a smallest crypto order in Checkout rules if you want one.
  4. Place a small order on your store and pay it in crypto. It is marked paid, and delivered, once the payment counts.

Prefer a processor? Connect NOWPayments, Cryptomus, Heleket or BTCPay Server from the same page with the credentials in the table above (connect your own gateway). ShopFast takes no fee on orders paid to your own wallet or processor.

Crypto fits products that should arrive the second they’re paid, like license keys. For buyers who want to pay with crypto but don’t have a wallet, gift card payments with Binance USDT cards are a slower, reviewed alternative.

Step by step

  1. 1. Make a store wallet account

Create a separate account in your wallet for store payments, so the xpub you share shows nothing else.

  2. 2. Paste your xpub or address

In Money → Payments → Crypto, paste the xpub or a receiving address for each coin you take: BTC, LTC, ETH, USDC or USDT.

  3. 3. Set your edge cases

Under Price lock and edge cases, choose how short a payment may be and still count. In Checkout rules, set a smallest order for crypto if you want one.

  4. 4. Run a test order

Place a small order on your store and pay it in crypto. ShopFast watches the chain and delivers the order as soon as the payment counts.

Questions sellers ask

Can a buyer charge back a crypto payment?

No. There is no bank in the middle to reverse it, and ShopFast can't pull it back either. If you agree to a refund, you send it yourself from your wallet or your processor.

Does ShopFast take a fee on crypto payments?

Not when buyers pay your own wallet: there is no processor fee and no ShopFast fee, only the network fee for sending. Processors such as NOWPayments or Cryptomus charge their own fees.

Is it safe to share my xpub?

An xpub can't spend coins, but it shows every address and balance of that wallet account. Use a separate account for your store, and never share a seed phrase or private key.

Which cryptocurrency should a digital store accept?

Stablecoins (USDC, USDT) keep the dollar value of a sale, Litecoin is usually quick and cheap to send, and Bitcoin is the coin most buyers know. Offering two or three lets buyers use what they already hold.

What happens if a buyer sends slightly too little?

A payment within the shortfall you allow counts as paid. A bigger gap gives the buyer a countdown to send the rest; if it never arrives, the payment waits for you to accept it or send the coins back.

Can I use my own BTCPay Server?

Yes. Connect it with your server's address, store ID and API key. Buyers pay on your server's page and come back to their order once the payment is confirmed.

Sell digital products the moment they're ready

Storefront, checkout, instant delivery and fraud checks in one place, from ShopFast. Buyers pay your own accounts or crypto wallet, and ShopFast takes no cut of those sales.
