How to sell digital products online: the complete guide

To sell digital products online, pick something you can make or source once and deliver over the internet, put it in a store with a checkout, connect a way to get paid (cards, PayPal or crypto), and automate delivery so every buyer gets their file, key or access the moment they pay. Then protect each sale with fraud checks and a clear refund policy, and bring buyers in through search and your community.

Selling digital products is simple to start and easy to do badly. The product costs nothing to copy, but every manual step, every payment that can’t be confirmed and every chargeback eats the margin. This guide walks through the whole path, from picking a product to keeping buyers coming back, and links to a deeper guide at each step.

What counts as a digital product?

Anything a buyer pays for and receives over the internet. In practice there are three kinds, and how you deliver each one decides how you set it up:

The full list, with how each is delivered, is on what digital products you can sell.

1. Pick a product people already look for

The best first product is one you can make or source once, that people already search for or ask about in communities you’re part of, and that you’re allowed to sell. Look at the questions people ask in your Discord servers, subreddits and comment sections: a template that saves an hour, a preset pack for a style people keep asking about, keys for software you build.

Check the rules early. Keys must come from you or an authorized source, music and art must be yours to license, and accounts for games and other services can only be sold where the service allows transfers. ShopFast’s Acceptable Use Policy lists what’s never allowed. For a longer list of starting points, see digital product ideas.

2. Choose where to sell: a marketplace or your own store

Marketplace Your own store
Buyers Some arrive through the marketplace’s search You bring them: community, search, social, ads
Customer relationship The marketplace’s Yours: emails, updates, repeat sales
Rules and fees Set by the marketplace Set by you and your payment provider
Brand and pricing Their page, their comparisons Your design, your options and bundles

Most sellers of keys, software and community access end up with their own store because the buyer relationship is the business: you need to tell owners about updates, replace a key that fails, and sell the next version. A store on ShopFast gets an address on shopfa.st the moment you sign up, 17 templates with a visual editor, and your own domain on a paid plan. See building a digital storefront.

3. Set up the product so it sells itself

Write the product page for the buyer who has one question left. Say exactly what they get, what it works with, and how it’s delivered. Put every version of the product on one page as options rather than separate products: durations (1 Day, 7 Days, 30 Days, Lifetime) for keys, license tiers for beats or fonts, formats for templates. Each option keeps its own price and, for keys, its own pool.

Pricing is a decision, not a formula. Durations, tiers, bundles and pay-what-you-want each suit different products; how to price digital products compares them.

4. Connect how you get paid

Offer the ways your buyers already pay. For most stores that’s cards (through Stripe, Square or PayPal checkout) plus crypto to your own wallet. On ShopFast you connect your own accounts and ShopFast takes no fee on those payments: your provider’s own fees apply and the money goes straight to you. Crypto (BTC, LTC, ETH, USDC and USDT) can go straight to your own wallet with nothing in between.

Every method has trade-offs for digital goods: cards and PayPal can be disputed, crypto can’t be reversed, and some person-to-person methods aren’t meant for business sales at all. Payment methods for digital products compares them in one table.

5. Automate delivery

Instant delivery isn’t a nice extra for digital products: it’s what buyers expect. Set it up once per product:

  • Keys: add them to each option’s pool. Checkout hands out one unused key per sale and never the same key twice.
  • Files: upload them once. Each order gets its own signed download link, with an expiry and a download limit.
  • Access: connect your Discord server or Telegram bot. The role or invite is granted on payment and removed when the membership ends or the order is refunded.

Delivery waits until the payment is really confirmed: the right amount, in the right currency, for that exact checkout. How instant delivery works goes through each product type.

6. Protect every sale

Digital goods can’t be returned, which makes them a target for stolen cards and “never received it” disputes. Three things cover most of the risk:

  1. Fraud checks before delivery. ShopFast’s Fraud Shield checks every checkout with blocklists, VPN and proxy checks, velocity limits, a risk score and your own rules, and holds suspicious orders for you to approve.
  2. Limits where the risk is. Cap card orders, especially a buyer’s first one, with order limits per payment method.
  3. A clear refund policy. Say what happens to delivered keys and files. Buyers in the EU, EEA and UK confirm at checkout that they want delivery right away, which waives their withdrawal right for digital content; the receipt records it. See refund policies for digital products and preventing chargebacks.

Tax is the other thing to get right from the start: with your own gateway you’re the seller of record and handle your own sales tax and VAT. Tax on digital products explains the basics.

7. Run a test sale

Before you share the link, buy your own product. On ShopFast, Simulate first sale runs a real order through checkout, delivery and your balance with a TEST- key, so your pool and your money are never touched, and shows you the buyer’s order page. Test mode does the same for every checkout on your store for 1, 24 or 72 hours (test sale).

8. Find your first buyers

  • Your community first. Post your store link where your buyers already are. Selling inside Discord works well: see how to sell on Discord, or sell on Telegram.
  • Search. Every ShopFast store publishes product structured data, sitemaps and product feeds for Google Merchant Center. SEO for digital product stores covers the rest.
  • Your own site. Add buy buttons or the whole checkout to pages you already have with embeds, or skip the website entirely: selling without a website.
  • Other people’s audiences. Affiliates and resellers sell for a share, and ShopFast’s seller referral program pays you for stores you bring.

9. Keep the buyers you have

The cheapest sale is the second one. Tell everyone who owns a product when there’s an update (by email, Discord DM or Telegram) with updates to owners, keep a status on products that can break, replace failed keys without a ticket, and ask for reviews from verified buyers.

Mistakes that cost new sellers money

  • Delivering by hand. It caps your sales at your waking hours and turns every late reply into a dispute.
  • Four products for four durations. Put them on one product as options so buyers compare in one place.
  • Accepting every card order instantly. One batch of stolen cards can cost more than a month of sales.
  • No refund policy. Buyers dispute with their bank when they can’t find one.
  • One payment method. If it goes down or a buyer doesn’t have it, the sale is gone. Offer at least two.
  • Selling what you’re not allowed to. It ends with a frozen account, wherever you sell.

Step by step

  1. 1. Pick a product you can deliver without touching each order

Choose a file, a key or an access product you can make or source once. Check that people already search for it and that you're allowed to sell it.

  2. 2. Open a store with a checkout

Create a store, pick a template and add the product with its options and prices. A store on ShopFast gets an address on shopfa.st right away.

  3. 3. Connect how you get paid

Connect your own Stripe, PayPal or other gateway, or crypto straight to your wallet. Buyers pay your accounts and the money goes straight to you.

  4. 4. Automate delivery

Upload the files or keys so checkout hands them out the moment a payment confirms. Add a Discord role or Telegram access if the product includes a community.

  5. 5. Protect every sale

Turn on fraud checks, set order limits for card payments, and publish a refund policy that says how you handle delivered keys and files.

  6. 6. Run a test sale

Run a test order through checkout and delivery to see exactly what a buyer sees, without touching your real keys or money.

  7. 7. Bring in your first buyers

Share your store link in your community, put buy buttons on your own site, and give each product page a title and description people search for.

Questions sellers ask

Do I need a website to sell digital products?

No. A ShopFast store comes with its own address on shopfa.st and a ready-made template, so you can share a link the same day. You can connect your own domain later, or put buy buttons on a site you already have.

How much does it cost to start selling digital products?

You can start on ShopFast's free plan. Your payment provider charges its own processing fees on each sale, and ShopFast takes no fee on payments through your own accounts. Paid plans add things like a custom domain; current plans are on the pricing page.

How do buyers receive a digital product after paying?

On their order page, in the receipt email and in their account library, the moment the payment confirms: a key from your pool, a signed download link, or the Discord role, Telegram invite or membership the product grants.

Do I need a registered business to sell digital products?

It depends on your country and your payment provider. Many providers let individuals sell, but they all have their own requirements, and you're responsible for reporting your income and any sales tax. Check your provider's rules and ask a local accountant.

Is selling digital products passive income?

Delivery can be fully automatic, so each extra sale costs you almost no time. Making the product, answering buyers, updating it and finding new buyers is still work, especially at the start.

Should I sell on a marketplace or my own store?

Marketplaces can bring buyers, but they set the rules, keep the customer relationship and usually take a larger cut. Your own store keeps the buyer, the price and the brand yours, but you bring the traffic. Many sellers start with their own store and their existing community.
