Sellers of digital goods ask buyers to pay with PayPal Friends and Family (F&F) for one reason: it looks cheaper and safer for the seller, with no selling fee and no PayPal purchase dispute. Before you build a store around it, know what PayPal itself says about it.
PayPal’s terms do not allow Friends and Family payments for goods. Friends and Family is for sending money to people you know. Buyers who pay for a product that way get no purchase protection, and taking F&F for sales puts you outside PayPal’s user agreement. Read PayPal’s terms for your country before you decide.
This page answers the common questions honestly, explains how ShopFast confirms F&F payments for sellers who take them anyway, and shows the PayPal checkout that avoids the problem altogether.
Is PayPal F&F allowed for goods?
No. PayPal separates personal payments (Friends and Family) from payments for goods and services. A purchase from a store is a payment for goods or services, whether it’s a download, a license key or access to a private server. Asking buyers to mark it as Friends and Family doesn’t change what it is.
What that means in practice:
- For the buyer: no PayPal purchase protection. If the order goes wrong, PayPal won’t step in.
- For you: you depend on a payment type the provider’s terms don’t allow for sales. What PayPal does about that is up to PayPal.
- For your sales: buyers who know the rules may decide not to pay at all, or ask for a protected option first.
F&F isn’t risk-free for you either. A buyer who funded the payment with a card can still go to their card issuer, whose rules are its own.
PayPal goods and services vs friends and family
| Goods and Services | Friends and Family | |
|---|---|---|
| Meant for | Buying from a seller | Sending money to people you know |
| Fine for store sales | Yes, within PayPal’s rules | No, under PayPal’s terms |
| Buyer purchase protection | Yes, under PayPal’s rules | None |
| Fees | PayPal’s own selling fees | PayPal’s own fees for personal payments, if any |
| If something goes wrong | A PayPal dispute, where you answer with evidence | No purchase protection claim |
| How your store learns of the payment | PayPal reports it to the checkout | Your store has to read PayPal’s email or notification |
The fee difference is why F&F is tempting. The protection difference is why buyers, and PayPal, care.
How ShopFast confirms PayPal F&F payments automatically
For sellers who take F&F despite all this, ShopFast confirms each payment without anyone reading emails by hand:
- At checkout the buyer sees the exact amount, your PayPal email and a short order code, like SF-7KQ2M.
- They send the payment with the code in the note.
- PayPal emails you “You’ve got money” from service@paypal.com, and your Gmail forwards it to your ShopFast address for PayPal.
- ShopFast accepts the email only if PayPal’s own signature checks out, it was sent to your PayPal email, and it carries the code and the exact amount. Then the order is delivered.
This works with any PayPal account. On a Business account you can also paste ShopFast’s address into PayPal’s Instant Payment Notification (IPN) settings: each notification is checked with PayPal, and a payment reported both ways counts once. A payment with the wrong amount or without the code is never confirmed automatically. It shows in Money → Payments for you to sort out with the buyer. Every check is listed in connect your own gateway.
The better choice: PayPal checkout
You can take PayPal without F&F, and without sending buyers away from your store, in one of two ways:
- PayPal with API keys (a Business account): paste the Client ID and Secret of a Live app from developer.paypal.com. Buyers get PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo and cards, pay in a window over your checkout, and you refund from ShopFast.
- PayPal with just your email (any account type): buyers pay through PayPal checkout on PayPal’s page and come back to their order. Payments PayPal holds as pending wait until PayPal completes them, and refunds happen in PayPal.
Either way the buyer pays as Goods and Services, you stay within PayPal’s terms, and ShopFast takes no fee on those orders. The full walkthrough is in selling digital products with PayPal.
What you trade for protection, and how to manage it
The pull of F&F is that a buyer can’t open a purchase dispute. With PayPal checkout they can. That risk is manageable:
- Stop fraud before delivery. Fraud Shield checks every checkout, before payment and again after PayPal confirms it, and holds suspicious orders until you approve them (Fraud Shield).
- Answer disputes with evidence. Chargebacks from PayPal are imported with their evidence deadline. You add delivery records, the keys sent, the buyer’s IP and country, and downloads (buyer protection).
- Be the faster route. Report a problem on the order page opens a claim with you, with a three-day reply-by date, so buyers have a reason to come to you before PayPal.
- Cap what PayPal carries. Order limits give PayPal its own smallest and largest order, separate from cards.

If you take PayPal Friends and Family for digital goods anyway
It’s your decision and your account. If you go ahead, at least be fair to your buyers:
- Offer a protected option next to it. PayPal checkout, a card processor or crypto to your own wallet, so buyers who want protection can choose it.
- Be upfront. Don’t hide what F&F means for the buyer. Say how you handle problems in your refund policy, and honor it.
- Ask for the exact amount and the code. Payments without them wait for you to match by hand.
The same caution, and the same receipt-forwarding setup, applies to Cash App $Cashtag payments. To compare every way to get paid, see payment methods for digital products.
Questions sellers ask

Do buyers get protection when they pay with Friends and Family?
No. Friends and Family payments come with no PayPal purchase protection, so a buyer who pays this way has no PayPal claim if the order goes wrong.
Can ShopFast confirm Friends and Family payments automatically?
Yes. Your Gmail forwards PayPal's 'You've got money' emails to your ShopFast address, and ShopFast accepts one only if PayPal's signature checks out and it carries the order code and the exact amount. Business accounts can also use IPN.
What is the difference between PayPal goods and services and friends and family?
Goods and Services is for buying from a seller: PayPal's selling fees apply and the buyer is covered by PayPal's purchase protection. Friends and Family is for sending money to people you know, with no purchase protection.
Do I need a PayPal Business account to take PayPal on my store?
Not for PayPal checkout with just your email, which works with any account. Connecting with API keys, for PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo and cards in a window over your store, needs a Business account.
