# How to sell subscriptions and memberships for digital products

> To sell subscriptions online, decide what a member gets each period, sell it as a membership or as duration options, and let buyers renew on a saved card. ShopFast charges auto-renewals each period and retries declined cards, and when a membership ends or is fully refunded, the access it granted, such as a Discord role or Telegram access, ends with it.

A subscription is a promise that something will keep arriving. That is what separates it from a one-time sale, and it's
why a membership lives or dies on delivery, not on billing. Before you set up recurring billing, work out what a
member gets each month that they couldn't get by buying once. The billing side is the easy part.

## What can you sell as a subscription?

Recurring payments fit products where the value keeps coming:

- **Community access.** A paid Discord server or a private Telegram channel, where new posts, calls or answers arrive
  every week.
- **Software access.** An app, a tool or a hosted bot that you keep running and improving.
- **Content drops.** New files every month: templates, presets, sample packs, reports.
- **Ongoing services.** Monthly coaching, reviews or a retainer for a set amount of work.

If you can't name what arrives next month, sell it once instead. A one-time price for a finished product is easier to
buy and easier to keep.

One membership can carry several of these at once. A creator might grant a Discord role for the community and post a
new file to members every month as an update, so the chat and the downloads renew together on one payment.

## Two ways to sell monthly access

ShopFast gives you two ways to charge for time. Pick by what the buyer receives.

| | Membership | Duration options on a key product |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What the buyer gets | Ongoing access: roles, channels, updates | A key that works for a set time |
| Typical options | Monthly, yearly | 1 Day, 7 Days, 30 Days, Lifetime |
| Renewal | Auto-renew on a saved card | Auto-renew on a saved card |
| Fits | Communities, content, services | Software that checks a key |

For key-based software, the [license keys guide](/sell/license-keys) explains duration options and key pools.

## How auto-renew works

At checkout, buyers can turn on **auto-renew**. Their card is saved and charged again each period, and when a charge is
declined, ShopFast retries it ([auto-renew](https://shopfa.st/docs/selling/auto-renew)).

Auto-renew charges a saved card or a PayPal account. Buyers who pay with [crypto](/payments/crypto), a bank
transfer or a manual method can still opt in: each renewal reaches them as an emailed pay link, and if they later add a
card it renews by itself from then on. Say on the product page how long a period lasts.

Be plain about renewal on the product page: the price, the period, and that it renews automatically. Clear terms
prevent the most avoidable kind of dispute, where a buyer forgot they subscribed.

## A membership site alternative

The classic way to sell memberships is a site with logins, a paywall and a members area. That's a lot to build and
maintain, and your members already have accounts somewhere else. Deliver access there instead:

- **Discord.** The membership grants a role, and the role opens your paid channels. It's removed when the membership
  ends ([selling Discord roles](/sell/discord-roles)).
- **Telegram.** The buyer gets a single-use invite to your private channel or group, and the bot removes them when access
  ends ([selling Telegram access](/sell/telegram-access)).
- **The buyer's library.** Files and updates land in the library every buyer already has with your store.

If your product lives in your own app, connect it with the [REST API](https://shopfa.st/docs/api) and signed webhooks, or build your own
storefront on the [headless API](https://shopfa.st/docs/headless). The API and webhooks come with paid plans; see current plans at
[/pricing](https://shopfa.st/pricing).

## Keep members from leaving

People cancel when they stop noticing the value. Make it visible:

- **Post what's new.** Catalog → Updates sends a changelog, and a file if there is one, to everyone who owns the product,
by email, Discord DM and Telegram. You can send it only to members with active keys or certain options
  ([updates to owners](https://shopfa.st/docs/guides/updates-and-watermarks)).
- **Start every member well.** Every product can send a message to its buyers. Use it for a short "start here" so new
members find the good part in their first session.
- **Keep a rhythm.** A predictable schedule (a weekly post, a monthly drop) gives members a reason to stay through
  quiet weeks.
- **Show that it works.** For software memberships, a product status and your store's status page tell members the
tool is looked after, and buyers can subscribe to changes ([product status](https://shopfa.st/docs/store/product-status)).

## When a membership ends, is refunded or charged back

Endings are where subscriptions get messy if access is managed by hand. On ShopFast, a full refund ends the membership,
removes Discord roles and Telegram access and stops download links. A chargeback removes Telegram access too, and a
chargeback you win gives it back ([buyer protection](https://shopfa.st/docs/selling/buyer-protection)).

**Fraud Shield** checks every checkout, including the first payment of a membership. Buyers in the EU, EEA and UK tick a
box asking for immediate delivery, which waives their withdrawal right for digital content, and the receipt confirms it.
For your written policy, see [refund policy for digital products](/guides/refund-policy).

## How to price monthly access

- **Lead with monthly.** It's the easiest yes for someone new.
- **Add a longer period.** A yearly option, priced below twelve months, rewards members who already know they'll stay.
- **Be careful with lifetime.** A lifetime member pays once and expects you forever. Price it well above a year, or
  leave it out.
- **Offer a short first step.** A cheap week lets people try before they commit.

For the methods behind each number, see
[how to price digital products](/guides/price-digital-products).

## Questions sellers ask

### Can buyers pay for a subscription with crypto?

Yes. Auto-renew charges a saved card or PayPal account by itself; crypto can't be charged automatically, so buyers who pay with crypto and opt in get an emailed pay link for each new period instead.

### What happens when a renewal payment is declined?

ShopFast retries the saved card instead of giving up on the first decline. Tell members on the product page how renewals work so a declined card doesn't come as a surprise.

### Do I need a membership website to sell subscriptions?

No. You can deliver access where members already are: a Discord role, a private Telegram channel, downloads in their library or a key for your software.

### What happens to access after a refund?

A full refund ends the membership, removes Discord roles and Telegram access, and stops download links. Files already downloaded can't be taken back.

### Can I offer a lifetime option next to monthly?

Yes. Put each period on one product as its own option, for example 30 Days, a year and Lifetime, each with its own price.

### Who handles tax on recurring payments?

With your own gateway you're the seller of record, so tax is yours to handle. ShopFast Pay, available by application, collects and remits VAT and sales tax for you.
