# How to sell on Discord: a shop bot, commands and a store link

> To sell on Discord, keep orders out of DMs: put a store link and a shop bot in your server, so members buy with /buy or from your store and get their order delivered automatically. With ShopFast, buyers have the /buy and /redeem commands, your team has /lookup, /restock and /push-invoice, and any product can also grant a Discord role.

Many Discord sellers start the same way: a member asks to buy, you agree on a price in DMs, they send money, and you
paste the product back by hand. It works for the first handful of orders. After that you're answering DMs at 2 a.m.,
checking payments against usernames and losing track of who got what. Selling on Discord properly takes three things: a
store your members can reach in one click, a shop bot in your server, and delivery that doesn't wait for you.

## Why selling through DMs stops working

Manual DM sales break in predictable ways:

- **You are the bottleneck.** Every sale waits for you to be awake and online.
- **Payments are hard to match.** A transfer with no order attached is a support ticket waiting to happen.
- **There's no record.** When a buyer disputes a payment, a DM thread is weak evidence.
- **Impersonators move in.** Scammers copy staff names and avatars and DM your members first, offering cheaper deals.

The fix for all four is the same: every sale goes through a checkout that delivers automatically and leaves a record.

## What a Discord store needs

You need four things, and none of them are a website you build yourself:

1. **A store.** Every ShopFast store gets an address on shopfa.st with a ready-made template, on every plan.
2. **Products that deliver automatically**: license keys, downloads, memberships, bundles and roles.
3. **A way to get paid** that your members already use (see below).
4. **A bot in your server** so members can start a purchase where they already are, and staff can handle orders from
   there too.

If you've never set up a store, [how to sell digital products](/sell-digital-products) covers the basics.

## Use the shop bot commands

ShopFast's Discord bot gives buyers two commands, /buy and /redeem, and gives your team three. The ones you'll use
every day:

| Command | Who uses it | What it's for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| /buy | Members | Start a purchase from inside your server |
| /lookup | Your team | Look up an order when a member asks about it |
| /restock | Your team | Add stock to a product without opening the dashboard |
| /push-invoice | Your team | Resend an invoice to a buyer |

Staff commands matter more than they look. A lot of Discord support is "I paid, where's my stuff?", and /lookup answers
it in the channel where it was asked. /restock means a moderator can refill a sold-out product from their phone.

## Lay out your server to sell

A server that sells well makes the store easy to find and support easy to reach. A layout that works for many shops:

- **#rules**: what you sell, how to buy, and that staff never DM first.
- **#store**: your store link pinned at the top, and one short message per product category.
- **#announcements**: restocks, new products and updates.
- **#status**: a link to your store's status page, where buyers can see whether each product is working and subscribe to
  changes ([product status](https://shopfa.st/docs/store/product-status)).
- **#support**: one place for order questions, so they don't scatter across DMs.

Reviews belong on your store, where they count as social proof for every visitor. If you collected vouches with
MyVouches, they can be imported as reviews.

## Deliver orders and roles automatically

When the payment confirms, the buyer sees their keys, files or links on the order page, and the same items arrive in
the receipt email and their account library. Nobody needs to be online. More on how that works in
[automatic delivery for digital products](/guides/instant-delivery).

Any product can also **grant a Discord role** the moment it's paid for, and the role is removed on a refund or when a
membership ends. That's how paid servers and buyers-only channels work; the details are in
[how to sell Discord roles](/sell/discord-roles).

After the sale, **Catalog → Updates** sends a changelog, and a new file if you have one, to everyone who owns a product,
by Discord DM as well as email and Telegram ([updates to owners](https://shopfa.st/docs/guides/updates-and-watermarks)).

## Take payments and keep fraud out

Discord communities pay in many ways. Connect your own gateway (Stripe, PayPal, Square and others) and ShopFast takes no
fee on those orders, or take crypto straight to your own wallet ([crypto payments](/payments/crypto)). Compare the
options in [payment methods for digital products](/payments).

A busy server attracts people testing stolen cards as well as real buyers. **Fraud Shield** checks every checkout with
blocklists, VPN and proxy checks, velocity limits and a risk score, can ask for an email code or 3-D Secure, and holds
flagged orders until you approve them ([Fraud Shield](https://shopfa.st/docs/selling/fraud-shield)).

## Follow Discord's rules and your own

Discord has its own terms and policies on what can be sold in a server and how servers can be monetized. Read the
current versions before you open a shop, because breaking them can cost you the server. ShopFast's own policy applies on
top: no cheats, cracked software, stolen accounts or adult content ([what you can sell](https://shopfa.st/legal/acceptable-use)).

## Sell beyond your server

Your store link works anywhere your audience is: a bio, a video description, a Telegram channel. You can put buy
buttons on a site you already have ([selling without a website](/guides/sell-without-a-website)). If part of your
community lives on Telegram, a Telegram shop bot sells the same products there
([selling on Telegram](/sell/telegram-access)).

## Questions sellers ask

### Can I sell on Discord without a website?

Yes. Every ShopFast store gets an address on shopfa.st that works as your Discord store link, and members can start a purchase with /buy inside your server.

### What does the /buy command do?

It lets a member start a purchase from inside your server, so they don't have to go looking for your store.

### How do staff handle orders from Discord?

Your team can look up an order with /lookup, add stock with /restock and resend an invoice with /push-invoice, all without opening the dashboard.

### Can I sell products and roles in the same server?

Yes. Any product can grant a Discord role, so a buyer of a key or a download can also get a buyers-only channel, and a membership can grant a role for as long as it runs.

### Is selling things on Discord allowed?

Discord has its own terms and policies on what can be sold and how servers can be monetized. Read the current versions for your server, along with ShopFast's own rules on what you can sell.

### How do I stop scammers pretending to be my staff?

Tell members, in your rules and next to your store link, that staff never DM first and never take payment in DMs. If every sale goes through your store or the bot, a DM asking for money is a scam by definition.
